Description : A tribal Khashia girl preparing betel leaves for sale at her house in Sangram Pungi, a Khashia village, near Jaflong in Sylhet district. Betel leaf or "paan" is a tropical creeper belonging to the pepper family of plants. The Aryans called it tambula and the Arabs tambul. People chew it to sweeten the breath and colour (crimson) the lip and tongue and also to have some narcotic pleasure. Normally, paan is chewed with lime paste (chun) and areca nut or betel nut (supari).
